Protected Characteristics

PROMOTING THE NINE PROTECTED CHARACTERISITICS

We work to ensure that our children understand that there are no outsiders at Cheadle Heath Primary School, everyone is different, we celebrate our differences, we are all equal in our differences.

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation because of the protected characteristics that we all have. No form of discrimination is tolerated at Cheadle Heath Primary School and our pupils show respect for those who share the protected characteristics.

At Cheadle Heath Primary we actively promote these in our curriculum and work to embed them into our ethos. We believe in inclusive practice for all of our community and ensure that our curriculum design and lesson content promotes and values all learners, all adults and all families. We do not teach about all the protected characteristics in every year group. The curriculum is planned and delivered so that our pupils develop age appropriate knowledge and understanding during their time at school.

We are proud of our diverse school and actively promote inclusion for all, celebrating the different faiths and backgrounds and the identities of all.  We have a range of books which are read as class texts over the course of the year to encourage positive and guided discussion of the protected characteristics and we strive to create an environment where children can share their opinions and ask questions. We teach anti-racism through our partnership with the Ethnic Diversity Service's Racism v Anti Racist programme and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is delivered through PSHE, where children are taught about healthy relationships and that the make-up of families can be diverse.

We strongly support the nine protected characteristics defined in the Equality Act 2010 in all aspects of school life from recruitment of staff to curriculum design, to school values and to how we support vulnerable families. The 9 Protected Characteristics are actively promoted in school through:

  • Our school ethos statements in the School Development Plan and Self Evaluation

  • Core values: Aspire Believe Achieve

  • Behaviour & Relationships Policy

  • Conscious role modelling by all adults in the school community

  • Active engagement and communication with parents / carers

  • Assemblies

  • Discussion within curriculum subjects, taking across-curricular approach

  • PSHE / Religious Education (RE) / RSE lessons

  • Pupil Voice

  • Educational visits

  • Student Leadership Team

  • Extra-curricular activities, after-school clubs, charity work and participation within the local community
