Children in Key Stage 1 have a daily phonics lesson. During their phonics lessons they learn and use the different phonemes (sounds) required to aid reading and spelling. It would be helpful to practise these at home so that children know the sound represented by each grapheme (group of letters). There are lots of fabulous resources for phonics games to support your child on the Phonics Play website, BBC Schools and ict games.
In June all year 1 pupils nationally are screened to check if they have achieved the standard expected for phonics.
