Introducing Writing

 

Suggested activities to support your child’s writing skills and help improve pencil control and letter formation.

  • Using play dough or plasticine (rolling, squeezing, pressing, forming letters and numbers)
  • Threading beads / laces
  • Finger painting
  • Construction toys – e.g. blocks and Lego
  • Jigsaw puzzles
  • Air Writing – large to begin with, then getting smaller forming shapes/letters/numbers in the air
  • Writing shapes / letters / numbers on backs
  • Use of chalk, pencils, crayons, felt tips

 

Helping your child write

  • Value all your child’s writing
  • Remember early writing may look like ‘scribble’ or marks – this is a very important stage of writing.
  • Help your child become aware of the meaning and purpose of writing through the signs and symbols in the environment.
  • Give them the opportunity to write – lists, letters, cards, invitations
  • Provide paper, crayons, pencils, paint, chalk
  • Talk about their writing with them.
